Why Swaffham?

While Swaffham is a beautiful market town, the statistics reveal a community facing significant, hidden mental health challenges. The lack of localised support services in rural West Norfolk has contributed to a growing crisis of isolation and distress. This is why we have chosen Swaffham as our initial launch location.

22.6%

of Swaffham residents are struggling with depression

With nearly a quater of our community facing depression, mental health is not a distant issue - it's a local reality. This high rate suggests that many of our neighbours are carrying a heavy burden in silence, often without the specialised support found in urban areas.

What does the data say:

30%

Over 30% of the Swaffham Community lives alone

Living alone can quickly turn into feeling alone. In a rural setting like Swaffham, physical distance often leads to social isolation. This 30% represents thousands of people who may lack a daily support network, making community spaces like Room to Breathe a vital lifeline for connection.

25%

Self Harm Rates are 25% higher than national averages

This is a sobering statistic that we cannot ignore. Elevated rates of self harm as a 'distress signal' for a community that is struggling to cope. It highlights an urgent need for safe, non-clinical spaces where people can find support before they reach a point of crisis.

Data obtained from Breckland Technical Health and Wellbeing Paper

These aren't just numbers, they are our neighbours.

Swaffham's unique challenges - rural isolation, higher than
average distress, and a lack of local services - are exactly why room to breathe is establishing a presence here in Swaffham.

We believe that by providing local, accessible spaces, and emotional support, we can turn these statistics around
